I am here with Ed and this is going to be an awesome trip. He will be leading some sessions as we go through these cities. We will also be talking about european worldviews and what we can learn from that as people minister in north america. The pastors who will come to this will also get to connect with some on the ground workers here to discover ways their church can become involved in the Great Commission

Why am I surprised that you guys are getting this reaction? I guess I expect people, especially church going people and church leaders, to be students of culture - to be a people "in" the world, but not "of" the world. The church today finds itself at a watershed moment. People today are self-consciously seeking purpose and significance. They have embarked on a search for spiritual fulfillment. As a result, it is critically important for the church to

1.	Listen to and fully obey the unchanging Word
2.	Listen to and understand the culture

The biblical model that can help us seize this moment is found in Acts 17, where Paul engages the Athenians on Mars Hill. We all need to be prepared to take a walk through "Athens" with our mouths cloed and our eyes and ears open, looking for evidences of God's footprints as we tour the culture. God is at work in the world among "unknown gods" whether or not we retreat into our holy huddles or not. It is up to us to get in on what is doing rather than asking God to get in on what we are doing. In this way we can ride the wave of His Spirit through culture, cultivating Christian communities along the way.

peace be with you . . .

Hey Guys,
Great time talking and meeting each other the other day. I am so glad you guys made time to talk with us about Europe and what ministry might look like in the European context. The format was so conducive for conversation and relationship building. I hope that we are able to meet up again very soon.
Your ministry is valuable to the work being accomplished in Europe.

First of all I would like to thank you for the props - however overstated they are. I have spent the last week trying to process all that we discussed in Nashville and I have been chewing mostly on the idea of the intangible mission. We as a church are trying to be a tangible expression of the Kingdom, but we operate in intangibles such as building relationships, seeing everyday life as an expression of being sent by God into the nooks and crannies of this world, and forming a missional community. We own no property, we have no money, and while people are making the decision to follow Christ, it is not expressed in a "walk to isle and ask Jesus into your heart" kind of way.

This is what About Europe is, I feel, trying to flesh out in their cultural context - intangibles. The worldview discussion was on point. Anyone who is interested in culture and the ideas that influence it should hear this presentation. The postmodern mindset is not only alive and well in Europe, but in the states also. Unfortunately, many churches and especially churches in the south operate in a mode that pretends that postmodernism does not exist. Which brings me back to the idea of intangibles. I would think that most program-driven churches would have a hard time wrapping their minds around the concept of doing mission by setting up an incarnational presence in a community. In other words, they would want to hear about revivals, backyard Bible clubs, and how many times they could show the Jesus film, etc. Yet these same churches need to hear about this and not only how it fits in Europe, but also their own context. Therefore, any church leadership who is struggling to find ways of reaching the emerging generations should attend an About Europe meeting. I think that they will find that what the Upstream Collective is trying to do will help them in a local as well as global context.

I hope this helps. Peace be with you . . .

Tom,
We don't this time around. Please stay tuned, we'll be announcing the next round of About Europe meetings soon. If you're interested in helping us find a host for a meeting in Colorado, please let us know!

Also, we're working on making the content of our meetings available for download as a podcast/vidcast. Not quite the same as sitting down to talk in person, I know...

Thanks,
Caleb

Spencer,
Sorry to take so long to get back to you. We're busy kicking off our tour of the U.S.
We would love to help you as you develop your strategy and pray through your involvement in Camden. Larry says you have been in touch with him. I'll talk with him about the best way to get with you, but we'd love to help however we can.
Thanks,
Caleb

Steve,
Thanks for your comment. The transition has been a good one (so far), and we're thankful for God's ongoing provision. We kick off our U.S. tour tomorrow, with two meetings in Ft. Meyers, Florida, and one on Tuesday in Orlando.

We're big fans of ACB basketball (the Spanish professional league) and have some friends that play in Madrid area. I always thought that would be a great platform.

We're going to be in Cincinnati on August 18th. That's close to Lexington, isn't it? We had a meeting planned for Louisville around then, but that fell through. Any chance you could put something together for us on the 17th?

I'd love to hear more about your church plants in Europe if you get a chance!
Thanks,
Caleb
